Landscaping of the visiting site of the Roman villa of Pisões

Approximately 10Km southwest from Beja, in Alentejo, the archaeological site of Villa de Pisões keeps the remaining relics of a manor house occupied during the roman imperial period, between the 1st century B.C and the 4th century A.D.

Found in 1967 and becoming a classified building in 1970, the built complex is only partially excavated, having been discovered most of the owners’ house and almost all the thermal baths that belonged to it, as well as a damn that provided the water supply to the complex, which also included a large pool. It is an impressive and exciting testimony to the Roman presence and activity in this part of the Iberian Peninsula and the width of the property and infrastructures already exposed prove its relevance.

The arrangement of the archaeological site implies the creation of an access path from the entrance of the property as well as the construction of a pedestrian area around the ruins together with the establishment of several stopping and resting points along the route, which will be defined and organized. Therefore, it is proposed to set out a path made out of white marble dust gravel that adjusts to the topography and that takes us to the visiting area. This main area will be determined by a grit pavement made out of the same type of marble, which will be rammed to the ground, forming a large scale rectangle that confines the archeological site. Within that geometrical limit and around the ruins, through the extension of some of its walls, there will be placed benches built from solid marble identical to the one used on the paths. These benches will be used as stopping areas and will be engraved with necessary instructions in order to obtain additional information about particular aspects and explanations of the ruins.
